| Security, Convenience and Portability are key reasons a Wireless Network Application can benefit your workplace or home.
A wireless router affords you the convenience of connectivity in existing buildings without cutting into the structure. A clean, uncluttered appearance is the result of your Wireless Installation with high performance and reliability. Modern Wireless Systems are safe and secure with technology designed to keep unauthorized parties off of your Wireless Network. Broadband Internet Connections broadcast safely throughout your office and home. No more hassles with co-workers or family members over access time! Everyone can share the same Wireless connection on multiple computers, both Desktops and Laptops! |

| A Broadband Router with Firewall is also a "must have" security feature with DSL and Cable Modem systems! When properly configured, your computer is virtually invisible to unscrupulous individuals trying to gain access to your system! When used in conjunction with a Software Firewall, ( such as Zone Labs "Zone Alarm©" - a free download -), your computer passes stringent security tests! A wireless network in your home or office can be a real convenience. With a few easy steps you can minimize your risk of intrusion from unauthorized parties. Hackers will find it easier to move on and find an easier target when you take the time to prepare your wireless network with these simple steps.
1. Change the SSID
This is the "service set identifier" you will find in the wireless router setup panel. Linksys© routers default SSID is Linksys©. Change it to something unique, (no, not your name!), so the type of equipment you have is not easily identified.
2. Disable the Broadcast ID of your Wireless System
By blocking the transmission of your system ID you are adding another layer of security by not announcing that you have a wireless apparatus broadcasting.
3. Change the Default Administrator Password
Knowledgeable hackers rely on the administrator password for your wireless router to be set to default. By changing the default password to a unique password consisting or characters, numbers and both upper and lower case letters you create a password that is very difficult to decipher.
4. Be Sure to Enable Encryption
This is the step that encrypts data so that only authorized users gain access to data sent over this wireless network. WEP is the most common, and least secure, mode of encryption. It is the default measure of encryption on older wireless systems. 40 bit and 128 bit encryption is available (some have 256 bit but are uncommon). Your performance will be reduced slightly with the enhanced security of 128 bit encryption, but it may be a small price to pay. WPA is more secure and really is the more preferred method. Not all older equipment has WPA available. For the small cost of the upgrade to a newer wireless card or wireless router your network will be more secure. Before upgrading you should check to see if the equipment you have can be upgraded to WPA.
5. Set Your Firewalls
Your wireless router comes with a built in firewall. You should become familiar with your wireless router by reading the manual and understanding the settings, especially the firewall settings. You control traffic through your wireless router to and from your wireless network. You should also install a packet filter (software firewall) as mentioned above. Zone Alarm makes a very reliable product in both a free and Pro version. You should not rely solely on Windows firewall for this aspect of protection.
6. Enable MAC Filtering
Each piece of network equipment has a unique identifier called a MAC, or Media Access Control address. Set your wireless router to accept only connections from your MAC ID or ID's and you restrict access to your wireless network to only those that are listed in your MAC filter.
7. Disable DHCP
DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, allows the wireless router to automatically assign IP addresses to items in your wireless network. By turning off DHCP and assigning the IP address manually to your network components, and limiting the number of connections, the ability to access your wireless network has been reduced to only those IP addresses which are already assigned by you. There is no authorization for more devices to join your wireless network until you allow it through Static Addressing.
By taking the time to secure you wireless network you minimize the risk of intrusion. This will not guarantee that you won't be hacked bit it does offer a front line deterrent. Taking no steps at all is risky and invites trouble.
